Peak Season May Be Over But Return Season Is Just Beginning

As holiday madness comes to an end and 2021 comes into focus, PCF breaks down the issues that will plague early Q1. According to Freight Waves “American consumers will return about $90B worth of unwanted gifts this year… Last week on a call with investors, Raj Subramaniam, EVP of Global Strategy and Marketing and Communications for FedEx, said that about 15% of all goods are returned, and clothing is returned at about double that rate. January, the peak month for the retail returns business, sees 51% of the returns in a given year.” With peak season coming to a close and the return period ramping up, PCF continues to commit resources and invest in facility upgrades to handle the on-going influx in volume.

While the holiday season may have ended, the headaches of peak continue for retailers. As the backlog from the holidays slowly thins out, returns are posing a new threat. From USA Today: “David Malka… The chief sales officer of goTRG, a company that processes returns for some of the biggest retailers and manufacturers in the country including Walmart, Lowe’s, Dell and Lenovo, Malka uses UPS, FedEx and the Postal Service to ship packages to e-commerce customers, stores and manufacturers, and 2020 saw a more than 40% increase in its already massive shipping volumes.” While returns continue to give carriers headaches and affect their overall logistic performance, PCF (like other regionals) is uniquely immune to this issue. Having capacity available gives PCF the ability to bypass the logistical nightmare of return season.

As a growing company, PCF understands the importance of preparing for unforeseen obstacles. 2020 has forever changed the ecommerce market and we are prepared for the “new normal” that has overtaken the industry. With upgrades to our routing system, onboarding of more couriers, expanding our Customer Experience departments PCF has demonstrated its commitment to evolving to meet market demands. We will continue to embrace this wave of change throughout 2021 and beyond, to provide our customers the best final mile experience the northeast has to offer.

Wishing you a successful start to the new year!
